While I almost never receive or send faxes, I wanted a fax number for that just in case. Considering that the fax service itself is cheap, and emails me the fax rather than me printing it out, I can decide if the fax I received is something I would want to print out. The fax number is just that – faxes. However, I think the company will do better if they also allowed for voicemail along with the fax capability. If I done my research correctly, Hyla Fax will support both fax, and voice on one telephone number. However, Hyla Fax will require that I use my own telephony server which I have never been successful in using one.
Carrier
I use a company called Faxage for my faxing services. When I receive an incoming fax, the service will collect the fax, convert into a .pdf file, and send it off to me via email. I can then open the .pdf file, and view the fax.
If I wished to send a fax, I will use a unique email address with the UID being the full telephone number (ITU Standards). Faxage will then process the email received, and send it as a fax using my Faxage phone number.
This service is $3.95+tax, and 5ยข per minute. Since I rarely send or receive faxes, this is not an issue, and likely will just be paying for the number, and not much beyond that.
Devices
For devices, I just need a computer with an internet connection, an email client, and the ability to open and read .pdf files. I use a Mac PC, and that PC can support the software needs of the service, and I use Comcast Internet Essentials to provide me with Internet Service.
Conclusion
I don’t receive nor send faxes often. With that in mind, some people might consider this as a waste of money. This could be seen as that, but I would have it, and not need it than need it, and not have it. And since the service is less than $5/month, this will not pose an issue with paying for the monthly bill.
